Access control for Shopify

Lock anything in your store. Decide exactly who gets in.

Put a lock on a product, collection, page, price, or your whole Online Store. Add keys that open it, each built from conditions: a customer tag, a passcode, a secret link, a location, a purchase history. Everyone else sees a sign-in prompt, a passcode form, or a message you write.

Example lock

Lock: the Wholesale collection.
Key: one condition, the customer is tagged with wholesale.

A signed-in wholesale buyer sees the collection. A new visitor is asked to sign in. A retail customer sees a message pointing them to your wholesale application.

How it works

Three ideas: locks, keys, and conditions.

A lock decides what's restricted. Keys are the ways in. Conditions say what has to be true for a key to work. Your theme updates within seconds of saving, and many stores are set up in a few minutes.

1 · Lock

What to protect

A product, a collection, a page, a blog, a vendor, search, the cart, or the entire store.

2 · Keys

The ways in

Give a lock one key or several. Any key that works opens the lock, so each one is a different way in.

3 · Conditions

What must be true

Each key holds one or more conditions, like "is tagged wholesale" or "gives the passcode". A key works only when all of its conditions are met.

Lock Wholesale collection

Key 1

  • Customer is tagged with wholesale
  • and is visiting from the United States

Key 2

  • Visitor gives the passcode TRADESHOW
US wholesale buyers get in with Key 1, which needs both conditions. Trade show visitors get in with Key 2. Everyone else sees a sign-in prompt or a message you write, styled to match your theme.

What you can lock

Anything in your Online Store.

Lock one resource, or put many products, collections, or pages under a single named lock. Lock the whole store and leave the home page, policies, or customer pages open.

  • Entire store
  • Products
  • Products by tag
  • Collections
  • All products
  • Product variants
  • Vendors
  • Pages
  • Blogs
  • Articles by tag
  • Prices & add to cart
  • Search
  • Cart
  • Customer login
  • Anything you can express in Liquid

Lock or just hide

Keep locked items out of sight, too.

  • Hide locked products from collections, search, and grids
  • Hide navigation links that point to locked content
  • Keep locked pages out of sitemaps and search engines
  • Hide prices and add-to-cart buttons, and show a "Log in to purchase" prompt instead

Locksmith works in the Online Store channel, with both new and legacy Shopify customer accounts.

Conditions

Build keys from 20+ conditions.

Put one condition in a key, or several that must all be true. Every condition can be inverted ("everyone except…"), and keys can be copied between locks. When the built-in conditions aren't enough, write your own in Liquid.

Customer accounts

Signed in, tagged with a value, email address on a list or from a domain, at least a number of orders, or has purchased a specific product.

Passcodes

One passcode, a list of passcodes, or thousands from an input list, with single-use codes and a different redirect per passcode.

Secret links

A private URL that opens the lock, or unique link codes from an input list for each recipient.

Location & visitor

Country, region, or city; IP address or range; store domain for Markets; or a confirmation prompt like "I'm over 21".

Date & time

Open before or after a moment, or on a weekly schedule. Plan a launch, an early-access window, or store hours.

Cart & email lists

A product or variant in the cart, a minimum cart value, or membership in a Klaviyo list or segment or a Mailchimp list.

See every condition in the Locksmith guide.

Use cases

What merchants build with Locksmith.

Password protection

Password protect a page, product, or collection

Shopify's password covers the whole store. Locksmith protects just the page, product, or collection you choose.

Hide prices

Hide prices until customers log in

Let everyone browse, but show prices and add-to-cart buttons only to customers who meet your conditions.

Wholesale

Run retail and wholesale from one store

Show case pricing and wholesale-only products to tagged buyers, hide prices from everyone else, and keep wholesale payment terms for wholesale accounts.

Members & staff

Build a members-only area

Approve registrations before customers can shop, gate content behind a subscription, or give your team a private store section.

Launches & VIP

Run private drops and early access

Share a passcode or secret link with your list, open a product at a set time, and keep bots and resellers out of checkout.

Regions

Show the right catalog in each region

Limit products to the countries you can sell them in, or vary content by Shopify Markets domain.

Beyond the lock

The details that make access control work.

Prompts that match your theme

Sign-in, registration, passcode, and email-signup prompts take on your theme's styling. Write your own messages and translate them for each language.

Checkout validation

Only let customers with the right tags buy products with matching tags, even through cart permalinks or bots.

Payment methods by tag

Show or hide payment methods based on customer tags. Offer Net 30 to wholesale accounts and no one else.

Input lists

Use a Google Sheet that stays in sync, or upload CSV, XLSX, TXT, or JSON. Lists can hold millions of emails or passcodes.

Hide parts of a page

Hide specific theme sections, blocks, or snippets, or use manual mode to lock only part of a page.

Shop app aware

Locked products are removed from the Shop app by default, so private items stay private there too.

Theme-matched prompts

Locksmith's prompts and messages now take on your theme's fonts and colors.

For developers & agencies

Code when you need it.

Write conditions and locks in Liquid, read a visitor's access state in your theme or headless storefront, and manage locks from your own systems with the Admin API.

{% comment %} A custom Liquid key condition:
open the lock for customers whose
   metafield says they're approved {% endcomment %}
{% if customer.metafields.membership.status == "approved" %}
